What to Look for in a Food Manufacturer
Food manufacturing quality and regulatory compliance requirements differ significantly across product types. These three criteria apply broadly across food categories and address the qualification requirements that matter most before committing to a production partner.
FDA Registration and FSMA Preventive Controls Compliance
All food manufacturers producing products for US commerce must hold current FDA food facility registration and comply with the FSMA Preventive Controls for Human Food rule. These are legal requirements, not quality options. FSMA requires documented food safety plans, hazard analyses, and preventive controls for each facility and product type. Manufacturers who have not completed FSMA compliance cannot legally produce food for US commercial sale. Confirm registration status and FSMA compliance documentation before engaging any food manufacturer.
Third-Party Food Safety Audit Certification
Major grocery, club store, and mass retail buyers require third-party food safety audit certification from their suppliers. SQF and BRCGS are the two most widely recognized schemes. FSSC 22000 is also accepted by most buyers. A manufacturer without third-party audit certification cannot be a supplier to major retail accounts regardless of product quality. If retail placement is your goal, confirm your manufacturer holds current certification under a recognized scheme before committing to production.
Product Format and Regulatory Category Expertise
The requirements for shelf-stable acidified foods differ from USDA-inspected meat products, which differ from dietary supplement manufacturing standards. A food manufacturer with deep expertise in your specific product format is more likely to have appropriate equipment, validated processes, and regulatory documentation in place. Confirm format-specific expertise as a primary qualification step before committing to any development.
Key Certifications for Food Brands
Food manufacturing certifications vary significantly by product type and target retail channel, and the certifications most relevant to your brand depend on your specific category and distribution strategy.
SQF or BRCGS third-party audit certification is required by most major grocery and club retail buyers. USDA Organic certification is required for organic label claims and requires certified organic sourcing at every supply chain tier. Non-GMO Project Verified is expected by natural and specialty retailers. Kosher and Halal certifications open additional market segments. Gluten-free certification through GFCO requires dedicated production capability and testing. Fair Trade certifications are relevant for coffees, teas, chocolates, and other commodities with established ethical sourcing frameworks.
